One gateway to the collections

With the new platform ‘Search the Collections’, you get a single comprehensive entry point to search born-digital data, find archival records and information about their creators, and explore transcriptions of archival materials.

The new search platform is a significant step forward that will make the collections more accessible to a wide range of users.

A much-needed update

Many of the Danish National Archives’ search systems have been in use for decades. The launch of a new search platform helps future-proof the ability to search the collections. Additionally, we’re introducing a more comprehensive and user-friendly way to search transcriptions of archival records, which we haven’t been able to offer before.

Two search options

Archival records and datasets

In this tab, you search the Daisy archival database, including content on Arkivalieronline and ‘Digidata’ with born-digital data, such as electronic registers, e-journals, and research data.

Transcriptions of archival records

In this tab, you search the text from documents transcribed in the Danish National Archives’ transcription portal (Rigsarkivets indtastningsportal).

New features enhance your search

There are many new functions and options for filtering and refining your search. Here are four new features that many users have been requesting:

  • Filter for online materials: You can filter your search results to show only hits available on Arkivalieronline or born-digital data that can be downloaded in various statistical formats.
  • Advanced search in transcriptions: When searching a specific source collection of transcriptions, you can perform advanced searches using fields relevant to that particular source type.
  • Search descriptions and notes: You can now search deeper into the information we’ve recorded about each archival series, archival version, and record creator.
  • Search for exact matches: You can choose to see only search hits that contain the exact search terms you’ve used, particularly useful when searching transcriptions.

Old and new search entries

We encourage you to use the new search platform to get the most out of the Danish National Archives’ extensive collections and all the new features. However, you can still search directly in Daisy and Digidata, and access online content on Arkivalieronline.

Transcribed censuses and parish registers must still be accessed via the Danish Demographic Database. We’re working on making these transcriptions searchable in ‘Search the Collections’ soon.

Searching in Danish

It’s important to note that the ‘Search the Collections’ platform operates entirely in Danish. This means:

  • All search fields and interface text are in Danish
  • All archival materials, including records, series, and datasets, are registered in Danish
  • You need to use Danish terms and names for archive creators, archival series, and datasets when searching

If you need assistance with Danish terms or navigating the system, you can contact the Danish National Archives for archival guidance. Our staff can provide expert help in English to support your research. To get in touch, please visit our Contact page.
