Summer opening hours at the Danish National Archives

The Danish National Archives have different opening hours during the summer. Find out how the reading rooms and interlibrary loans will operate over the summer of 2025.

Extra opening hours in the reading rooms in July

Remember to check opening hours, if you’re planning to visit the Danish National Archives this summer, as some reading rooms will be closed and others will have shorter hours than usual.

As something new this year, each reading room will be open for one week in July, Monday through Friday. Which week depends on which location you wish to visit.

Please note: During these weeks in July with additional openings hours, you can only use records that you have pre-ordered.

Odense reading room

The reading room is closed from July 7 to August 5.

From August 6, the reading room will follow regular opening hours.

Open June 30–July 4:

We are open Monday to Friday in week 27 (June 30–July 4) from 10 AM to 3 PM. Employees from the Danish National Archives will be available for questions and guidance on Wednesday and Thursday. Guidance will not be available on Monday, Thursday, or Friday. Only pre-ordered records can be used.

Extra help from volunteer genealogists

In week 27, you can also get help from our volunteer guides in the reading room on Thursday from 10.15 AM to 12 Noon.

Aabenraa reading room

The reading room is closed from July 7 to August 4. From August 5, the reading room will be open and follow regular opening hours.

Open June 30–July 4:

We are open Monday to Friday in week 27 (June 30–July 4) from 10 AM to 3 PM. Employees from the Danish National Archives will be available for questions and guidance on Wednesday and Thursday. Guidance will not be available on Monday, Thursday, or Friday. Only pre-ordered records can be used.

Viborg reading room

The reading room is closed from June 30 to July 4, and again from July 14 to August 4. From August 5, the reading room will be open and follow regular opening hours.

Open July 7–11:

We are open Monday to Friday in week 28 (July 7–11) from 9 AM to 4 PM. Employees from the Danish National Archives will be available for questions and guidance on Tuesday and Thursday. Guidance will not be available on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Only pre-ordered records can be used.

Copenhagen reading room

The reading room in Copenhagen will have reduced opening hours.

In Copenhagen, you can visit the National Archives’ reading room, located at The Royal Danish Library’s buiding the Black Diamond on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays as usual. However, from July 1 to August 31, 2025, the reading room will close two hours earlier than normal. This is because the National Archives must follow the opening hours of the Royal Library. From September 1, the reading room will return to regular hours.

Opening hours in Copenhagen from July 1 to August 31:

The reading room is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 AM to 4 PM

(Note: in week 29, the reading room is also open Monday and Friday)

You can get guidance in the reading room: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 AM to 2.30 PM

Collect your pre-ordered records in the reading room from 9 AM to 3.30 PM

Open July 14–18:

We are open Monday to Friday in week 29 (July 14–18). There will be no guidance on Monday or Friday. Only pre-ordered records can be used.

Please note: There are no volunteer geneaologists in the Copenhagen reading room during the summer holidays.

Deadlines for ordering records during the summer

During the weeks with additional opening hours, you can only use records that you have pre-ordered. To ensure these records are ready for use, please place your order well in advance. hen ordering, specify a usage date one week before you actually need the materials.This allows us to process your order even if many staff members are on summer vacation.

Please note that records from other reading rooms (interlibrary loans) must be ordered by June 19 if you want to use them from June 30 onwards.

As soon as your materials are ready, you will receive an email notification. The materials are not available until you receive this email. It’s perfectly fine if your materials are ready before your visit -they will be waiting for you.

When should I order records?

Odense and Aabenraa

If you want to use materials in week 27 (June 30–July 4):

  • Order by: June 21
  • Specify usage date: June 23
  • Order interlibrary loans by: June 19

Viborg

If you want to use materials in week 28 (July 7–11):

  • Order by: June 27
  • Specify usage date: June 30
  • Order interlibrary loans by: June 26

Copenhagen

If you want to use materials in week 29 (July 14–18):

  • Order by: July 5
  • Specify usage date: July 7
  • Order interlibrary loans by: June 26

Interlibrary loans closed in July

Due to the summer holidays, there will be no interlibrary loans of records or microfilms between reading rooms in July. This applies to all locations and reading rooms at the National Archives.

The last day to order interlibrary loans for use between June 30 and August 1 is Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 12 Noon.

Note: Interlibrary loans for Odense and Aabenraa for use in week 27 must be ordered by June 19 if you want to use them from June 30.
